Coonoor is the second largest hill station of the Nilgiri hill range, located at the head of the Hulikal ravine at an altitude of 5905 feet above sea level. It is 19 km from Ooty (also, Udhagamandalam or Ootacamund), another famous hill station of the Nilgiris. Coonoor is famous for its verdant environs and for a variety of wildflowers and birds. Coonoor is famous for its verdant environs and for a variety of wildflowers. Popular among them is Neelakurinji, because the spectacular carpet of these pale purple flowers blossoms at an altitude of over 2,500 m on the Nilgiri hills only once in 12 years. Due to this unique diversity, this region is recognized as India’s first biosphere.

Fauna of Coonoor includes over 100 species of mammals, 370 species of birds, 80 species of reptiles, about 39 species of fish, 31 amphibians and 316 species of butterflies. It includes the Bengal tiger, Indian leopard , Black panther , Gaur, Indian elephant, Mongoose, Malabar giant squirrel, Lion-tailed macaque, nilgiri langur, Gray langur and Nilgiri tahr.
It has largest population of two endangered species- lion-tailed macaque and nilgiri tahr.
